ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Six (6) printmakers and University of Montevallo resident artists answered this exhibition challenge and explored varied subject matter as they responded to Ebenezer Swamp through printmaking processes such as laser wood engraving, screen printing, and monoprinting. Collectively, their work investigates and celebrates the exceptional biodiversity, natural beauty, and educational and recreational uses of Ebenezer Swamp.
THE ARTISTS
ABOUT THE EBENEZER SWAMP ECOLOGICAL PRERSERVE
The Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve – approximately 60 acres of wetlands – is part of the University of Montevallo campus. Diverse and rare plants, animals, and fungi grow and dwell in this upland hardwood swamp. Inhabitants include Cockle Elimia, tiny snails endemic to tributaries of the Little Cahaba River; the Great Egret and the Barred Owl; damselflies and dragonflies; Cottonmouths and Midland Watersnakes; Loblolly Pines and Tupelo Gum trees; marsh grasses and sedges; and many other species. In addition to nurturing biodiversity, wetlands, including Ebenezer Swamp, act as natural water filtration systems, mitigate flooding in surrounding areas, and recharge aquifers. The headwaters of Spring Creek, the first in a series of connected tributaries that feed into the Cahaba River, are at Ebenezer Swamp. Ebenezer Swamp serves as an important learning space for students of all ages. It is part of the Alabama Birding Trail and as such has value for travel and tourism industries.
