My artwork uses the natural forms of plants, animals, and insects as a jump point for the creation of utilitarian and decorative lidded containers and sculptures. My most recent pieces focus on flower shapes based on wild flowers that grow around my art studio. I am creating eternally colorful clay flowers for use in the yard or home. These flowers won’t fade or require pruning or fertilizers! Intended as gestural and stylized representations of flowers, they express the joy that I feel as I look at colorful flowers in nature! The flowers are fired ceramic with a fiberglass stem this allows them to be installed in a flower bed or a flower vase. I imagine them adding color to homes and gardens for folks, like me, who don’t have a green thumb! I also create clay lidded containers utilizing bird and insect shapes. Each piece opens to allow access to a hidden interior space. Some include natural materials from my land to complete the piece. These pieces are more detailed and realistic than the flower sculptures which encourages the opportunity to closely look at the creatures depicted and contemplate their stories.
As an artist, I have been working in clay for many, many years. It has been the way that I have expressed myself since my childhood. Clay has been my friend and companion through many stages of life.
