Everything we know and experience is the result of the physical and chemical changes occurring to, and within, our world. Evidence of slow changes over geological time erupt, flow, and sink beneath our feet, seemingly frozen in time. The visceral experience and repetition of daily life, along with the turning of each season reveals a sense of natural process.
My work engages with the repetition of lived experience through use of local material and functional ware. Firing in atmospheric kilns allows for the most direct translation of natural processes in my finished work. Minimal material processing and minimal use of commercial material preserves the intrinsic qualities of local materials I employ, imparting an aesthetic unique to place. Accumulated molten ash containing minerals absorbed from the soil by trees, sweeping gradients of color traced by the flame of the kiln upon the wild clay “surface” of these characteristics existing beyond the scope of my control as an artist give my work a sense of spirit unique to the environments I inhabit.
