Kim Swafford

Originally a native of Alabama but I have called Belgium and Texas home at different times in my life. My fascination with clay happened in High School in 1973 in an art class where I was handed a magazine ad on how to build a kick wheel. With circular saw in hand and a book about pottery throwing, I built my first wheel, trying to learn the art of pottery throwing. Though my early efforts were met with challenges, I remained determined, eventually learning the craft under the guidance of a skilled teacher in 1982. Thus, continued my love of clay with setting aside different seasons of my life to learning about the art of throwing.

After years of ministry work, raising a family, and caring for loved ones, I found renewed inspiration in pottery during the pandemic, turning one of my lifelong passion into a full-time endeavor. My pieces range from mugs and dishes to trinket bowls, pitchers, vases, and unique hand formed centerpieces, all crafted from stoneware clay and glazed. Each piece carry a unique touch of craftsmanship. I also create oil lamps, royal & crown of thorns, crosses and Eucharist sets for those who appreciate the sacred offering both beauty and meaning to those seeking one-of-a-kind, handcrafted pieces. I want my hand thrown and formed kitchenware, dinnerware and decor to compel friends and family to come to the table together. When friends and family gather at the table good things happen – ideas are shared, lives are impacted and division between people diminish. I desire to bring inspiration to the family table, being warmed by the intrigue of a created thing that has gone from a lump of clay to a thing of functional beauty and purpose. And ultimately, that those who are enjoying the pottery, see the beauty and value of who they are created to be!
