Painting, to me, is about observing. I watch the world around me and internalize it, digest it, and spit back out something meaningful – digging for the unnoticed meaning in each moment, regurgitating that meaning. Each of us is a capsule of our experiences – a capsule of all the images that flash by us in a lifetime. I capture these images ”the images of my life” in these paintings. I began painting as a portrait artist, and in a way, still, all I make are portraits. Maybe they don’t all have a face, but they show a piece of someone’s life. The subjects I paint, I paint because of what they say about people, the people around me, the people in my world – sometimes family, sometimes strangers. But almost always, I’m reflecting on myself and my own life – my connection to these people, these objects, these places – whether that connection is fleeting or eternal. These paintings are moments filtered through my point of view. Our lives are worth remembering. And painting is my way of holding up onto my experiences. It’s my way of remembering my life.
