My work is a response to discoveries made while exploring the concept of the “blackcexperience.” My objective remains the use of memory as a catalyst for an investigation that could lead me to reconsider issues in novel ways.
I am particularly drawn to the visual language of circles and chevron-like shapes. I have begun to perceive them as symbols for the cyclical, grinding aspects of the Black condition in America. The circle represents the vicious, repetitive cycle that Blacks often find themselves trapped in, perpetuated by a unique history of systemic racism that, by design, kept us confined to lower socioeconomic strata. The chevron-like shape, on the other hand, creates a directional flow, suggesting way-finding clues for individual or familial journeys, as well as larger cultural movements spanning past, present, and future.
