Johnson is a Brewton, Alabama based artist and potter interested in utilizing locally sourced Alabama minerals like marble, shale, basalt stone, and chalk, to create ceramic glazes and clay bodies for pottery. Johnson processes these materials by hand and makes work in small batches and limited runs.
Johnson’s interest in local materials springs from a love of the beautiful glazes and processes of various ancient Asian ceramic traditions. The artists of these traditions utilized the materials they had at hand and mastered the alchemy of the process to create the beautiful works we still revere today. Johnson’s practice aims to find a way to make works that reflect these ancient traditions while also referencing the landscapes unique to this present place and time.
