It is our pleasure to announce that Deborah Davis of North Garden, Virginia has been selected as the Featured Artist of the 2018 Moss Rock Festival (MRF). The award winning Fall festival returns to The Preserve in Hoover for its 13th year of Nature, Smart Living, Art + Design this November 3rd & 4th.
As the featured artist, Deborah’s work will not only be showcased on the festival poster, but will also be integrated into the designs of the 2018 marketing campaign.
If you’ve seen the festival’s most recent campaigns, you’ll notice a trend. Nature and wildlife have been the focus and subjects of the MRF’s featured art image. Since 2014, a rabbit, a fox, a squirrel, a bird, plus various insects, indigenous Alabama plant life, and more have graced the poster and reinforced the festival’s eco-creative mission and nature themes. But what about 2018?
After coming across a 2016 story in The Washington Post about moths entitled “Underrated Beauty of Moths“, which also featured Deborah’s wonderful paintings of them, we were re-introduced to the gorgeous, artful design of these insects through her magnified, colossal interpretations of the various species. We were instantly smitten with how Deborah captured on canvas the diversity and detail of these furry, patterned, nocturnal creatures. Her work definitely ignites a deeper appreciation of the moth’s beauty. And hopefully, it stirs up a curiosity for their place and purpose in the natural world.
Picking one of Deborah’s moth works to show off on the poster was the hardest task of all. After much deliberation, we settled on an especially graphic species that is black, white & blue and native to Alabama, the Giant Leopard Moth. (SEE BELOW)
To learn more about Deborah and her work, stay tuned for our interview with her later this summer. But in the meantime, go see more of her moth paintings on her Featured Artist page. Or visit her website.
We hope to see you as we celebrate a year of the moth at Moss Rock Festival the first full weekend in November.
2018 is going to be a #MOTHrock kind of year!
